HOUR OF PRAYER
Welcome to the hour of prayer. You are about to journey through 12 segments of prayer.
Each segment is 5 minutes long and has a specific focus.
This hour is for you to commune with God, so take a few deep breaths, relax and follow the prompts.
Let this scripture be an encouragement as you begin:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
ADORATION
Adoration is an expression of deep love and honor toward God through prayer.
Not to us, o Lord, Not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.
Psalm 115:1
Pray like this:
Adore His Name, His righteousness, His love, His holiness, omnipotence, greatness, faithfulness, omnipresence, His Word, His Creation, and His work of redemption. For everything that he is – adore him.
WAITING
Waiting on the Lord is an act of surrender to God; often wordless worship.
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.
Psalm 46:11
Pray like this:
Surrender your thoughts and work to Him.
Name the things that you are surrendering specifically.
CONFESSION
Confession is the act of identifying and admitting sinfulness to God and remembering the sacrifice of Christ which paid our debt.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9
If you are able, kneel as a physical representation of submission, then pray like this:
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal unconfessed sins.
Confess your sins by name, turn from them, and accept God’s forgiveness through His Son Jesus Christ.
Ask God to change your heart rather than your circumstances.
SCRIPTURE
Praying the scriptures is to learn to feed yourself spiritually on His word and to pray according to His revelation.
Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to our word!
Psalm 119:27-28
During this segment, scriptures will be read over you.
Ask God what promises, commands, and warnings you are neglecting.
Ask the Lord to strengthen you with His Word.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28-29
He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40-29-31
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9
Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:26
As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm 103:12
And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.
John 14:2-3
WATCHING
Watching is a time of spiritual observation, to be on the look-out, to be spiritually aware of matters to pray for around you.
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
Colossians 4:2
Pray like this:
Ask for insight, discernment, and wisdom to know what to focus upon and what your priorities should be.
Be aware of issues and injustices around you and be alert to any prompting from the Lord.
INTERCESSION
Intercession is the action of intervening on behalf of another; to pray and focus on the needs and distress of others.
I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone.
1 Timothy 2:1
If you are able, stand up as a representation of standing on behalf of others, then pray like this:
Pray for a friend, that God’s will would be done in their life as it is in heaven.
Pray that their physical and spiritual needs would be met.
Ask for God’s provision, mercy, and grace in their life.
PETITIONS
Petitions are requests made to God in prayer.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Philippians 4:6
Pray like this:
Come to God in faith, as a son or daughter, in total dependence asking Him to provide and intervene.
Bring your desires and needs before your loving Father knowing that He is listening.
THANKSGIVING
Thanksgiving is acknowledging our appreciation to the Lord for who He is and what He is doing in our lives no matter the circumstances.
Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Pray like this:
Think about yesterday, and thank God for His care and provision for you and for others.
Thank the Lord for the blessings He has given and for the hardships He has allowed.
SONG
Singing praise to God can be a beautiful, musical expression of prayer.
Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless His Name; tell of His salvation from day to day.
Psalm 96:1-4
Make this song your prayer as you sing:
I stand amazed in the presence
Of Jesus the Nazarene,
And wonder how He could love me,
A sinner, condemned, unclean.
Chorus:
How marvelous! How wonderful!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful!
Is my Savior’s love for me!
He took my sin and my sorrows,
He made them His very own;
He bore the burden to Calvary,
And suffered and died alone.
When with the ransomed in glory
His face I at last shall see,
’Twill be my joy through the ages
To sing of His love for me.
MEDITATION
Meditation means to reflect upon or examine a matter more closely and to evaluate it spiritually.
Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked…but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1:1-2
Pray like this:
Think specifically about all aspects of your life. Do they line up with the counsel of the world or the law of the Lord?
Ask God to reveal the things that might be hidden in your life that are in the counsel of the wicked, and ask Him to replace it with a delight in Him.
LISTENING
Listening is a period of silence where you discern what the Lord may be telling you.
Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.
Ecclesiastes 5:2
Pray like this:
Ask God to speak to you, then still your mind and heart.
Don’t be hasty to think about anything, but rather focus on hearing from Him.
WORSHIP
Worship is the full-life response to who God is and what He has done.
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs.
Psalm 100:1-2
As this song is sung over you and with a smile on your face, use this time to tell Him that you know who He is, what He has done, and that you trust Him with your prayers.
Come thou font of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I’m fixed upon it
Mount of thy redeeming love
Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by thy help I come
And I hope by thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood
O to grace how how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to thee
I’m prone to wander, Lord I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, Lord, take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above
